Laura Leavy (Buenos Aires)
Statement
I work with uncertainty. I seek to answer the questions that live in me. I create art to understand my story.
I bring bonds to light, I materialize emotions, I rescue memories. I use material discarded from construction and sewing; I was nurtured by both worlds.
I decode industrial materials through poetic reflection. I am interested in overlapping planes, transparencies and their in-between spaces, discovering intersections. Materiality transforms my analysis.
Architecture taught me how to construct; art taught me how to deconstruct.
In my practice, I carry out installations, performances and objects are designed to be walked along. I usually hang the works so as to tense the space. I entice the spectator into action.
I believe in the transforming power of space. I create containing structures and overflowing webs.
I affect spaces. I create vacuums. I knit encounters.
Laura Leavy
An architect graduated from Universidad de Buenos Aires (1999). Master’s degree in Strategic Design Management by FADU/Politecnico di Milano (2000).
She trained with artists such as Liana Lestard, Jorge Mansueto, Silke, Rebeca Mendoza and Javier Alonso. She is currently participating in Clínica de concepto (Concept Clinic), a seminar lectured by Elena Olivera, and attending Taller del lugar, coordinated by Liana Lestard. In 2022, she attended the seminar Diarios del cuerpo (Journals of the Body), performance art workshop directed by Roma Vaquero Diaz, at La Flecha del Arte. In 2021, she carried out PAC (Contemporary Art Practices) at Gachi Prieto Gallery and Afilar la obra (Sharpening the Work) and Seminario de concepto de obra (Work Concept Seminar) at La Flecha del Arte. In 2018, she participated in the Residencia Manta (Manta Residency) in San Martín de los Andres, Neuquén.
She was raised in Venado Tuerto, from a family of bricklayers and seamstresses. She grew up in the middle of construction and design
